Avonlea Jane had an imaginary friend who lived in the woods near our campsite, and she said she had to go take her breakfast. Thankfully, we made enough pancakes to share, as long as Avonlea Jane didn't really leave the food in the woods. (The friend was imaginary; the bears were not.)
Our bug-bitten baby woke up with a ear swollen from bites.
The kids were excited for pancakes. We made both chocolate chip, banana, Brazil nut pancakes and banana paleo pancakes.

After breakfast, we left the park and drove a bit to Ashfield, Mass., an small town with around 2,000 residents.
We were quite stocked on food for the weekend, but we did score some gluten-free ginger brew at their farmers' market.
It didn't take long for our little ones to find friends--or for Avonlea Jane to start telling them what to do and what was what.
Right across the street was a lucky find. We love small town museums.
Look at that poor baby's ear!
The kids loved seeing the room full of kids' toys in the museum, especially the armor.
Will found the saddles but wasn't happy there were no horses to go along with them.
We walked past the old general store to find the hardware store, where it was rumored you could get ice cream for less than a dollar.

Victory!
Our itchy girl
On our way back to camp, we went to the Good Time Stove Museum and Three Sisters Sanctuary, a place on the 1000 Places list and one we'd seen featured on the local news magazine show, Chronicle.
The sanctuary was a large garden full of interesting sculptures.
That poor ear again!
When she found a circle of stones, Avonlea Jane insisted on reenacting the movie Brave. Daddy had to play both Merida's mother and the evil bear.
Making his own stone sculpture
After our picnic lunch at the sanctuary, we went back to the park and Mommy wanted to climb the fire tower. In reality, the children and David climbed the tower, and Mommy chickened out on step 11.
After another swim, we set out for a kid-friendly guided hike that featured water balloons for the kids.
Will napped on and off during the hike.
Avonlea Jane was one of six kids on the hike.
When Will fell asleep, I got to have his water balloons.
Scooping up salamanders
After dinner and marshmallows with roasted peaches, it was time for nature stories and bedtime with glowsticks.
