Family time in Pennsylvania

In our bedroom, there was a full bed for David, a full bed for myself and Will, and bunked twin bed for Avonlea Jane. She adored sleeping in a bunk bed and can't wait until she and Will get one this fall.

Reading in bed

On our last full day in Pennsylvania, we went to Lancaster to visit Wheatland, the homestead of President James Buchanan, who is apparently rumored to be the worst president in American history.

We learned that Buchanan was a bachelor, and his niece, Harriet Lane, was the first White House hostess to ever be called "The First Lady," as she wasn't Mrs. Buchanan. The two of them were personal friends of Queen Victoria and Price Albert, and Buchanan and Victoria were reportedly the first people to send personal telegrams across the Atlantic wire.

Above is Harriet's room. This was about the time in the tour where the kids and I ducked out. Unfortunately, our guide was a bit verbose and wasn't too fond of young people. This category also included Dillon, who was chastised for not paying listening or following directions during the tour. Yikes!

Once again, glad to be back at the house

Ready to head home

To break up our drive home, we stopped to visit the Crayola Factory, which was filled with perfect toddler activities.

Leaving downtown Easton

We had a great time with both families for the week, but once we reached Salem on Saturday evening, everyone was glad to sleep in their own beds.
