After heading our separate ways in Florida--Avonlea Jane to drive to Indiana with Grandma and Grandpa and David flying to Boston--Will and I spent some time touring Washington, D.C. We didn't get in until late in the evening, but we were fortunate to get a hotel room a block and half from the White House.
Will was enthralled with the whole city, mainly because everywhere he turned there were horses.
Our hotel was fabulous, and after the front desk crew made sure my bag was packed full of water and snacks for our day together, we set out for the quick walk to the White House.
Will spent much of the day perched on my back.
He was quite a bit bigger on this trip than he was the last time he was in front of the White House.
March 2012
We decided to hop on a double-decker tour bus to be able to see as much as possible and because Will wouldn't have an obstructed view from the top.
He peppered our guide with horse questions everywhere we went.
To go see the National Zoo, Embassy Row, and the National Cathedral, we needed to transfer from our bus to a trolley. Will loved finding all of our stops on the map.
Waiting for the next trolley
The United States Institute of Peace
Running toward the Lincoln Monument
The Vietnam War Memorial was a hard one for Will to understand.
This was the highlight of the day. Weeks later, and Will is still talking about the Lincoln Memorial. Every time he sees a penny he brings it up. He can't wait to go back and take Avonlea Jane.
It seems to be a family tradition that every time we go to D.C., we see Marine One. This time we were lucky enough to see it both come in and take off.
More horsies!
The gates to Arlington Cemetery and Robert E. Lee's house
The Air Force Monument
Will did get a brief nap in on one of the buses we took.
He was thrilled with the options from all of the lunch trucks, and it took a lot of narrowing down on his part, but he finally decided to go with a fish taco.
The U.S. Navy Memorial
The Columbus Monument
I don't think a guide had ever heard so many horse questions from someone on a tour.
The monument to Grant was Will's favorite of the day, after the Lincoln Memorial.
A castle, a castle!
After being a bus for quite some time, Will was still thrilled. He kept saying, "I'm so happy now. I'm so happy today."
Ford's Theatre
The house where Lincoln died, across the street from the theatre
Sherman and the final horse for the day
We ended our day at the South Lawn.
After a full day of touring from 9-5, Will was tuckered out. We crossed off quite a few places to see off of our lists, and neither of us can wait to come back again with the rest of our family. Will was most pleased with the number of horses, the Lincoln Monument, and getting our National Parks Passport stamped around town. "Next time we come, we'll get ice cream," he said.
