Places to see in Dorchester and Roxbury

We spent a day in Dorchester, crossing off nine places on the 1000 Places list.

Having a picnic on Castle Island

Fort Independence

Walking around Castle Island, once known as "The Irish Rivera" when it was the old Whitey Bulger stomping grounds

Heading into the zoo

This porcupine was quite busy carrying around his stick.

My little rooster and kitty cat

Our favorite animals were the prairie dogs.

On a recreated termite mound

In a truck that "crashed" into the lion enclosure

The kids were tickled by the pygmy hippo

We took a drive around the Forest Hills Cemetery, resting place of e.e. cummings, Eugene O'Neill, Anne Sexton, and several famous revolutionaries, abolitionists, and governors. The cemetery is also known for its large collection of interesting statuary.

Highland Park in Roxbury

The Shirley Eustice House

First Parish Church

The kids also recently had to say goodbye to their two good friends Taran and Finn, who were moving to Oregon. We were glad to have a parting dinner together, but Avonlea Jane was pretty upset.
