Washington, DC II

The Jefferson Memorial, where the kids were very excited to turn in their Junior Ranger packets for the National Mall

Becoming Junior Rangers

2014

2013 (notice, same hat and shorts)

This was Avonlea Jane's first time up close to the Lincoln Monument and Grandma's first time to DC ever. Grandpa hadn't been since he was a teenager.

On our way to tour the Capitol

We were sad the rotunda was closed for the day, but seeing the model of Liberty was cool.

The President's box at Ford's Theatre

Ford's Theatre is still a working a theatre that does shows almost every night.

Swearing in as Junior Rangers at Ford's Theatre, which had one of the most difficult activity packets yet. It really involved some critical thinking on Avonlea Jane's part.

The National Portrait Gallery used to be a Civil War hospital where Walt Whitman served as a nurse.

Waiting outside of the Archives

National Archives

Look at all those badges. She was a Junior Ranger for Presidents' Park, the National Mall, Ford's Theatre, and the DC police gave the kids an honorary sticker.

We couldn't photograph the documents at the Archives, so this was the best we could do.

Julia Child's kitchen at the Smithsonian of American History
(I failed to take a photo of the ruby slippers.)

Waiting for the color guard to line up at a Navy Band concert

They came in to the "Imperial March" from Star Wars.

The Navy rifle team was amazing.

We expected songs like "You're a Grand Old Flag," not "Happy" by Pharrell.
