The Virgin Mary & Breastfeeding

Some of you know that we have had some difficulty talking to our parish about the required baptismal catechises class and how it doesn't currently accommodate exclusively breastfed babies (in that you have to go after the baby is born and you can't take the baby with you to the multi-hour class...please). Maybe this news will help:

The Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, is calling for more artwork in the Church of a loving and tender breastfeeding Virgin Mary. These images used to be the standard, but fell out of favor around the 16th-17th centuries with the rise of protestantism and the emerging idea of the body as sinful instead of sacred. One of the authors for the paper, Father Enrico dal Covolo, a professor of classic and Christian literature in Rome, said: "The Virgin Mary who nurses her son Jesus is one of the most eloquent signs that the word of God truly and undoubtedly became flesh."

I just came accross your blog while I was looking for pictures of the virgin mary breastfeeding to put on my blog (simplelifemusings.blogspot.com). Anyway, I used your picture, and would love to credit it. My husband and I had the exact same problem with baptism classes at our church in Boston, and ended up convincing the priest to let us bring our baby with us. Good luck!
